Giants sign manager Bob Melvin to 3-year deal
The San Francisco Giants hired former San Diego Padres skipper Bob Melvin as their next manager, the Giants announced Wednesday.
His contract runs through 2026.
"Bob Melvin is one of the most well-respected managers and people in baseball today," Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi said in a statement.
"He brings a wealth of baseball acumen from all of his experience in the game, first as (a) player and then over the last 20-plus years as a manager or coach. Having worked with Bob in the past, I have seen firsthand the positive impacts he has on a team and an organization. I'm thrilled to be working with him once again and can't wait to get started."
The Padres granted Melvin permission to interview for the Giants job on Sunday. San Diego did not receive compensation for Melvin, according to the San Francisco Chronicle's John Shea.
Melvin, asked why he chose the SF job over remaining in SD, also cited the one year remaining on his deal. (He was given a three-year deal in SF.) He also expressed his love of the Bay Area, which is home for him. Otherwise, Melvin didn't delve too deeply into his departure.

The Giants fired manager Gabe Kapler on Sept. 29 after he posted a 295-248 record over parts of four seasons.
Melvin joined the Padres on a three-year contract ahead of the 2022 season. The three-time Manager of the Year led San Diego to an 89-73 record and a berth in the NLCS in his first season at the helm. The Padres failed to build off last season's success despite a roster littered with All-Star talent. San Diego finished the 2023 campaign with a disappointing 82-80 record and missed the postseason despite a late-season surge.
The Padres are expected to hire a new manager from within the organization, according to Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune. Former St. Louis Cardinals manager and current Padres senior adviser to player development Mike Shildt is considered the leading candidate, per Acee.
Padres bench coach Ryan Flaherty is also expected to receive strong consideration for the position, according to The Athletic's Dennis Lin.
San Diego is looking for its seventh different manager since general manager A.J. Preller took over the job in 2014.
Manager | Year |
---|---|
Bud Black | 2007-15 |
Pat Murphy | 2015 |
Andy Green | 2016-19 |
Rod Barajas | 2019 |
Jayce Tingler | 2020-21 |
Bob Melvin | 2022-23 |
Zaidi's contract with the Giants, which was set to expire at the end of the 2024 season, was also extended and will run through 2026.
